Position Overview


Volunteer support is needed for the WDMCS Community Education adult English classes. Under the direction of the Adult English Language Learner (ELL) Teacher, volunteers support beginning learners in improving their language skills, model appropriate student response to teacher instructions, promote self-esteem and confidence, and provide feedback to ELL teacher regarding student understanding of instructions and concepts.

Time commitment

Approximately 2-6 hours per week

Schedule and location

Slots are available between 5 and 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays at the Learning Resource Center (LRC), 3550 Mills Civic Pkwy, West Des Moines

Required qualifications:

  • Age 18+
  • No teaching experience necessary
  • Near-native fluency in English (native speakers of languages other than English are encouraged to apply, especially Spanish, Arabic, and Chin speakers)
  • Access to reliable transportation
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, interest in others
  • Patience and respect for individuals from diverse backgrounds who may have had disrupted formal education and other challenges in their lives
  • Proficient using a variety of technologies
  • Commitment to protecting learners’ right to confidentiality
  • Able to commit to a regular schedule for one 8-week session

Duties and Responsibilities

In-class duties and responsibilities

  • Take direction from adult ELL teacher in order to aid individual learners during pair and small group activities and whole group instruction
  • Support student goal achievement and overall English program success

Additional duties and responsibilities

  • Attend a volunteer orientation
  • Meet with adult ELL teacher periodically during session to discuss your experience and provide input about student progress
  • Write a short reflection (<1 page) about your experience to help with program improvement and fundraising efforts
